Wildlife products disposed off

Imphal, September 28 2014:
A number of wildlife products seized from different areas of Tengnoupal Forest Division, Chandel district were disposed off today.
The contraband items were set ablaze inside Manipur Zoological Garden compound this morning in the presence of Chief Judicial Magistrate Chandel Waikhom Tonen Meitei, Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) Mahendra Pratap, Manipur Zoological Garden Director Arun and other relevant officials.
Tengnoupal Forest Division DFO RK Amarjit said that the contraband wildlife products disposed off today included 115.50 Kgs of pangolin scales and 1.25 Kg of deer skin.

The wildlife products were seized since July, 2012 and in the process 12 different cases were registered.
Following the CJM Chandel's directive to dispose off the seized wildlife products by setting them ablaze, the wildlife products were disposed off today with due permission of the Chief Wildlife Warden.
Most of the wildlife products disposed off today were seized by 9 Assam Rifles and 24 Assam Rifles, said RK Amarjit.
Mahendra Pratap said that pangolin is protected under Wildlife Protection Act 1972 implying that it is an endangered species.
Pangolin and pangolin parts are being smuggled out from Manipur to South East Asian countries through Myanmar.
On being asked about the monetary value of the disposed wildlife products, Mahendra Pratap that such products cannot be sold in open markets.
Their monetary value can be calculated only after ascertaining their prices in black markets.
CJM Chandel W Tonen Meitei said that the seized wildlife products and arrested smugglers were produced before his Court.
Those found guilty can be imprisoned from 3 to 7 years apart from imposing fines of Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 .
