One RPF/PLA cadre reportedly involved in planting IED on Governor Road and triggering bomb blasts at Singjamei and Moirangkhom which targeted non-local labourers has been apprehended by police.
Briefing media persons at his office this evening, DGP Sahid Ahmad said that the arrested cadre was a part of the racket which brought in IEDs from Myanmar using different conduits/couriers and triggering bomb blasts at different parts of the State.
The arrested cadre has been identified as one Ningthoujam Joykumar alias Joychand of Khangabok, Thoubal.
He was working as a mechanic at Punshi Press, Paona Bazar.
The DGP stated that many incriminating articles have also been recovered.
Joykumar was directly involved in planting an IED on Governor Road on May 14 and this was revealed during preliminary interrogation.
He was also involved in the IED blast at Singjamei on May 29 which killed three non-local labourers besides injuring 18 people and again in the IED blast of June 14 which targeted a laundry shop run by a non-Manipuri and injured three persons at Moirangkhom.
This major achievement is the culmination of a series of vigorous efforts made by Imphal West District Police in particular and other valley districts police in general, the DGP said.
A total of 55 UG cadres were apprehended in a series of counter insurgency operations conducted at greater Imphal areas and other valley districts since the Singjamei Chingamakhong blast of May 29 till yesterday.
Altogether 10 hand grenades, five pistols, one revolver and a detonator were recovered from the arrested UG cadres.
Out of the 55 UG cadres, 11 are women and they were acting as couriers of arms and weapons.
Commenting on the prevailing law and order situation, Sahid Ahmad said that bomb attacks on non-local labourers, hurling hand grenades in connection with monetary demands and serving demand notes are most common.
To tackle these problems, a systematic action plan involving commandos, civil police, MR/IRB and women police with effective intelligence back-up has been formulated.
Moreover, 2000 police personnel have been deployed at 100 different places within Imphal Municipal area, said the DGP while seeking public cooperation in the police department's efforts to restore peace in the State.
