Driver killed, handyman missing as truck falls into river

Imphal, May 12 2022:
Driver of a truck was killed while the handyman Went missing after the truck fell into Chakumai River in Tadubi area under Mao police station of Senapati district on Thursday.
The victim driver has been identified as Binod Singha from Hojai, Assam.
He was driving the wheat laden truck (NL 07A 3486) when the accident took place.
According to Surface Transport Hill Area Drivers' Welfare Union treasurer Athikho Ranbir, who visited the spot, the truck Was heading towards Imphal from Dimapur when it fell into the river.
The driver died on the spot.
However, the handyman is still missing and high water level of the river owing to heavy rainfall is hampering the search operation.
Members of the two transporter bodies along with Mao police retrieved the body of the driver, which was later taken to Imphal for post mortem.
The two unions are trying to pull up the truck using their recovery machineries.
Athikho said that the area is an accident-prone area and in the last couple of years, nearly 30 people have lost their lives in road accidents in that particular area.
In 2017 too, a tourist bus fell into the exact same spot and killed nine people while leaving many injured.
Considering the geographical nature of the area, the authority should take up necessary measures to prevent occurrence of road accidents in future, he said.
Union joint secretary Thor and Senapati District Drivers' Welfare Union president Lokho were also part of the team that visited the accident spot.
