EAC formed for conservation of Loktak Lake

Imphal, May 30 2022: Loktak Development Authority (EDA) on Monday made a formal announcement on formation of Expert Advisory Committee (EAC) constituted by LDA on May 27 for formulating a Long Term Perspective Plan (LTPP) for Loktak Lake and its associated wetlands.

The announcement was made during a felicitation programme of newly appointed LDA chairman M Asnikumar organised by LDA staff at LDA site office, Ningthoukhong on Monday.

Speaking at the programme, M Asnikumar appealed to all the LDA staffers to work with dedication and to focus on creating a conducive work environment.

He also stressed on the magnitude of the task ahead for all the concerned stakeholders in conservation; preserving and maintaining the Loktak Lake which holds huge socio-economic and cultural significance in the region.

The participation of lake dwellers and local communities are crucial in the conservation mission as they share a unique and close bond with the lake, he said.

Asnikumar further stated that with the commencement of a new chap ter of LDA, he will strive to work tirelessly to ensure that the challenges before us are met appropriately and collectively.

During the event, it was officially declared that EAC will work for conservation and management of Loktak and to address the issues related to fast changing ecological situation and their impact on social/economic condition of the communities dependent on it.

The Committee comprises a chairman, member secretary and nine members namely, Dr A K Patnaik (IFS retired), a renowned wetland man agement and governance expert (former PCCF, Government of Odisha and former Chilka Lake Development Authority CEO) as chairman; Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology, Mumbai Dr Goldin Quadras as member secretary; while IIT Kanpur Department of Earth Sciences Prof (Dr) Rajeev Sinha; Forest Department additional PCCF SS Chhabra; Manipur University Department of Life Sciences Prof (Dr) Ksh Lal Bihari Singha & Prof (Dr) Thingbaijam Binoy Singh; Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, Uttarakhand senior scientist Dr SA Hussain; CIFRI, Bar rackpore, WB director Dr BK Das, a renowned expert on fishery; Wetland International South Asia (WISA), New Delhi director Dr Ritesh Kumar; MANIT, Bhopal, MP Prof (Dr) Surabhi Mehrotra, an expert on regional planning and social issues and LDA project planning in-charge Ng Sanajaoba will be the members.

LDA has authorised the Committee to deliberate on the issues taking into account all the relevant perspectives and to submit its suggestions/recommendations in the form of a detailed report within three months from the date of issue of the order.
