Imphal, January 11 2022:
In view of the 33rd Drivers' Day observance to be organised by All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers' Union on January 14, drivers will stay away from operating vehicles related to economic activities, announced Union secretary Maimom Anil Meitei.
Issuing a statement in this regard, Anil informed that the main observance function will be held at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound and will be marked by paying of floral tributes to the departed drivers who had rendered selfless service for the people of the state.
Anil also appealed to families of 287 drivers who have passed away to attend the observance.
M Anil recalled that Drivers' Day is being observed every year on January 14 for the last many years to commemorate the agitation launchedby drivers at Koirengei old airfield on January 14,1994 against social discrimination and injustice they had been facing as well as the killing of a handyman by unknown gunmen at Zubza town in Nagaland in June 1998.The Union has been working hard to maintain the bond formed between people of the state and drivers, who have a very important role to play in Manipur as transport of all essential items, passengers and goods in the state is dependent on them.
But, still there are many in the state and outside who discriminate the drivers, Anil lamented.
He further recalled various incidents that endangered life of many drivers while performing their service for the people.
In view of this, the Union has been appealing to both hill and valley people to respect the drivers and do not look down on the community, he mentioned.
The Union also requested drivers to stop plying their vehicles on the day of the observance.
