Imphal, January 11 2022:
The All Manipur Nupi Marup has vehemently condemned the extension of disturbed area status for another year.
In a statement, the Nupi Marup stated that several political parties, columnists, civil society organisations and people from the intellectual circle have been demanding the removal of the 'draconian and outdated' Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 from the North East region where the Act is being implemented following the 'Oting massacre' .
Claiming that the Nagaland State Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution to remove AFSPA 1958 from Nagaland, the Nupi Marup continued that several organisations in Manipur too staged a series of protests against the 'draconian Act' which gives impunity to security forces.
Reminding that Chief Minister N Biren had also assured to remove AFSPA 1958 from Manipur recently, the statement asked why N Biren Singh didn't attend the core committee meeting called by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the Act which was attended by Assam and Nagaland Chief Ministers.
Why is the disturbed area status extended in Manipur for a year when the Chief Minister had repeatedly voiced that the law and order situation here has improved considerably in public events, the statement asked.
