Imphal, August 06 2022:
State Health Society, Manipur State Mission director Dr Ningombam Somorjit has appealed to all concerned to only breastfeed all infants from birth till 6 months of age without fail saying that breastfeeding helps both the mother and the baby.
Child Health, State Health Society on Friday inaugurated the World Breastfeeding Week-2022 at the Directorate of Health, Lamphelpat, here.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Somorjit explained that although the World Breastfeeding Week had already been launched across the state, the programme was officially inaugurated on Friday under the theme of 'Step up for breastfeeding, Educate and support'.
During the weeklong observance, ASHA, Anganwadi and health workers will spread awareness among pregnant and lactating mothers in different districts regarding the benefits of feeding infants up to 6 months of age with mother's milk, thereby helping to prevent respiratory infections, diarrhoea, etc.
This is not to say that baby formulas are bad but the benefits of mother s milk are far greater as it also benefits the mother in preventing breast cancer and ovarian cancer, he added.
Dr Somorjit then observed that some communities in the state spill the milk produced right after the baby has been delivered, which is not good as the milk produced for the first time contains antibodies to boost the baby's immunity.
