Imphal, May 10 2022:
UNLF former chairman RK Sanayaima alias RK Meghen has stressed the role of mother in a society stating that deviation from this role would ultimately bring negative impact to the society.
Attending the International Mother's Day observance function organised by Apunba Khorirol Malemgee Lup at Manipur Press Club here on Tuesday, RK Meghen said that mothers have a unique role in the lives of their children which is why the world is observing International Mother's Day.
They should provide the right social education to their children while understanding their role and responsibility.
Among the different roles and responsibilities of Women, the role of mother is the most important one.
In the Manipuri society too, mothers have been at the forefront of grooming up their children to the right direction for ages, he said.
Right now, the Manipuri society is facing a crisis of identity.
Whether one should identify himself as Meetei or Meitei is a serious issue besetting the younger generations and there should be consensus in this regard.
At the same time, role of women is also important when it comes to identity of a community, Meghen maintained.
He also noted that with the emergence of private schools, the society is moving towards a different direction where there is no more social education from the parents.
With both parents working to live a decent life, they seldom have the opportunity to interact with their children and teach them valuable life lessons.
In the early years, there was a culture of family elders giving social education by the side of the Phunga (hearth), he recalled.
While noting that contemporary society has changed tremendously and there is no longer the culture of such family gathering where the elders could mentor the young ones, Meghen pointed out that formal education imparts in schools is not enough to take the society forward.
The society moves to a whole new direction when these roles of mothers are no longer performed, he said while stressing the need for an introspection in this regard.
He further expressed concern over the increasing menace of drug abuse in the society and emphasised on stringent laws to punish drug traffickers and producers.
The impact of drug abuse is felt upon the younger generation first.
Even young boys and girls studying in seventh or eighth standards have now started using drugs.
Now there are home delivery services of drugs and the government alone cannot fight this issue.
It needs a public movement led by the government, he said.
Yaibirel Trust secretary Sarat Khaidem, Nupi Samaj president Th Ramani, Leikol president Ksh Subadani and Naharol Sahitya Premi Samiti president L Upendra were also present on the occasion.
