Imphal, May 10 2022:
Welcoming the decision to forego the students' union elections for colleges this time taken in a joint meeting of the directorate concerned with student bodies, college principals and stakeholders, six student bodies opined that it would be meaningless to hold the elections as the academic session 2021-22 is about to end and there is also semester examinations coming up.
Addressing media persons at MSF office in the presence of representatives of AMSU, DESAM, MSF, AIMS, KSA and SUK, DESAM general secretary Mayengbam Somorjit said that students' union election was supposed to be held in October 2021 but had to be kept in abeyance due to prevalence of Covid-19 pandemic.
There is only about two and half months left for the current academic session to end while examinations for 2nd, 4th and 6th semesters are due in June, he said.
While noting that colleges are conducting internal examinations and sixth semester students will complete their college life in July, he maintained that conduct of election at this juncture will be detrimental to the efforts for covering up loss of study time due to the pandemic.
Considering all these facts, it would not be wise to hold college elections for students union, which will function only for two months, Somorjit reasoned while stressing the need to cease all activities which could affect the academic atmosphere.
Maintaining that some intending candidates are trying to make an issue out of the situation for their vested interest, he urged them to act responsibly.
The student bodies are open for any discussion in this regard, said the DESAM secretary.
