Imphal, May 10 2022:
Co-ordinating Body Khurai has urged for declaring the sacred and historical Thangjing Hill as a heritage site under the Historical Monument Act.
In a statement released by its spokesperson Th Bon Khurai, the Body stated that it was unfortunate of KSO to interfere and impose restrictions at one of the most scared and historical places of Manipur.
Thangjing Hill also holds an important place in the culture, tradition and custom of the state.
Thus, it appealed to the state government to declare Thangjing Hill as a heritage site to prevent any attempt to impose unwarranted restrictions in the future.
The Body continued that Thangjing Hill is inseparable with Moirang and the entirety of Manipur considering the civilisation of Moirang, which spanned for over thousands of years.
There have been instances of other communities residing in the area disturbing the religious rituals.
The Thangjing Koirel community is responsible for performing the yearly rituals.
However, in addition to the disturbances, vast expanse of the forest on the hill has been cleared to make way for new villages or for poppy plantations.
Urging the authority concerned to look into the increasing encroachments in the area, the Body appealed to the authority concerned to declare Thangjing Hill as a heritage site.
It further urged for eviction of encroachers in the valley based reserved forest area, as notified by the Manipur Durbar in 1932 after a survey of the area.
The Body also appealed to the authority concerned to take strict action against KSO for attempting to incite communal violence among the various communities of the state.
