Tobacco use origin of drug abuse: Dr Ranibala

Use of tobacco and related products is the origin of drug abuse while 90 percent of the oral cancer cases is mainly caused by consumption of tobacco, stated Dr Ranibala of Manipur Cancer Research Forum.
Speaking as a resource person during a cancer awareness programme and anti-tobacco campaign organised jointly by Manipur Cancer Research Forum and People's Foundation, Heirok on Saturday at Heirok Part 1 Heituppokpi, Dr Ranibala informed that the main objective of conducting the awareness programme sponsored by Manipur Pharmacy was to create maximum awareness among people about cancer formation due to use of tobacco and high chance of tobacco users becoming drug addicts.
While noting that tobacco is used excessively in Manipur, Dr Ranibala cautioned that tobacco consumption not only affects health of the users but also the society and future generation.
She also said that maximum awareness about ill effects of tobacco consumption must be given to youth.
Former RIMS medical superintendent Dr Y Mo-hen, who was chief guest of the awareness programme, pointed Out that Manipur ranks second among entire States of the country in tobacco consumption among women in the age group 15-40 years after Mizoram.
Citing a report, he said that majority of tobacco and related products made in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar is consumed in the North East.
He also said that maximum awareness must be given to people about ill effects of tobacco consumption and high chance of oral cancer formation due to tobacco consumption.
The awareness programme was also attended by Manipur Pharmacy proprietor Y Jitenkumar and Ningol Club president Kh Sophia.
