Imphal, July 02 2022:
While raising concern about the future of indigenous people of the state, Indigenous People's Forum Manipur (IPFM) has announced that it will be drafting a Manipur Indigenous People's Bill for the welfare of indigenes.
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club here on Saturday, IPFM president Ashang Kasar said that the various indigenous communities of Manipur are under threat from outside influences, including divisive policies.
IPFM will work to protect the bond between the indigenous communities as well as their future, apart from promoting horticulture, agriculture and animal husbandry, and standing against poppy plantations and drug trade.
Stating that the poor economic condition of the state is also one of the reasons of discontentment amongst the communities, Kasar remarked that the indigenous people have become heavily dependent on outside sources, while vast expanse of mountainous land are left unused.
In addition, there is no proper drug management in the state and it could be considered as a failure.
The present scenario is due to incompetence and insincerity of political leaders.
Thus, to protect indigenous people and the territory of the state, IPFM will draft a Manipur Indigenous People's Bill and move the same for tabling on the floor of Manipur Legislative Assembly, Kasar informed.
Later, the first volume of activities taken up by IFPM since its inception in 2019 was released.
