Under the auspices of Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi; Mamataz Manipuri Dance and Music Centre celebrated the 3rd festival of Manipur folk song at Kala Vidya Bhavan, Khurai Sajor Leikai on Saturday.
The inaugural function of the festival was attended by Manipur State Kala Akademi secretary Lourembam Kishorjit as chief guest, Mamataz Manipur Dance and Music Centre president M Chandra as president and Khurai Kala Vidya Bhavan president K Narjit as guest of honour.
Speaking at the event, Kishorjit pointed out that culture and tradition change along with the changing times.
Stressing the need for preserving the age old culture and tradition, he lauded the central government for encouraging such festival with an objective to preserve the unique 'Khulang Esei and Khunung Esei'.
In earlier times, Khunung Esei was popular and used as a means to convey one s ideas and feelings.
Moreover, Manipuri forefathers introduced several events relating to Nat Sankritan and Thang-ta upon realising its benefits to the society.
As such, the traditions and art forms have been passed down from generation to generation.
Pointing out that several art forms have changed with the changing times, Kishorjit noted that some art forms have been neglected and not preferred by today's generation.
There is an urgent need to preserve these traditional art forms by understanding their inner essence for the sake of future generations to come, he conveyed.
