Absentee school teacher drawing pay: SSUM
Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, April 01 2023: Socialist Students' Union of Manipur (SSUM) president S Yaima Meitei has remarked that there is no solid reason to give monthly salary to employees who failed to show up to work.

Addressing a press meet held at SSUM office located at the campus of Lalambung Primary School on Saturday, Yaima informed that a teacher in Praja Higher Secondary School, Lamsang, identified as Kshetrimayum Suranjoy, had been drawing his monthly salary from the school, while never showing up for work.

Suranjoy, who is an SSA upper primary teacher of 2012 batch, did not show up to the school from April, 2022 till March this year.

He was posted to the school under the School Fagathansi Mission in 2019, which is most shocking, the SSUM president said, while questioning how the Mission is supposed to be effectively implemented amid such cases.

Yaima continued that the situation came to the light when the students' body visited the school on account of low attendance rate of students.

SSUM not only found proof of the teacher's absence in the attendance register, but also in other evidences.

Questioning the government why it was paying the monthly salary to an employee who has never shown up to work, the SSUM president demanded strict punishment of all those involved in preparing the salary of the teacher, which is a far more serious concern.

This is an indirect indication of corrupt activities and scams, he said, while cautioning that SSUM will launch democratic protests if the government fails to take action on the matter.

Yaima then accused administrators and Admission Committee of Little Flower School of collecting huge amount of money from the people frequently.

For this year, the school opened the academic session for the KG level without providing any prior information.

Thus, the school authority must clarify on the matter, he demanded.

While acknowledging the role played by missionary schools in the state, the SSUM president, however, said that it is unacceptable to misguide the people.

The school authority should clearly state the admission process done at the KG level and the reason for charging exorbitant admission fees for KG level classes.

He continued that the state is already financially poor and as such, many poor parents, are unable to afford the high admission fees.

It is undeniable not to mistake charging of high fees in the name of admission to KG, as a huge scam.

Students should be provided the opportunity to study wherever they want, he said, while denouncing the use of personal connections to grab the few opportunities available.

Yaima then said that Question no.15 in the question paper of the Maths subject in the ongoing HSLC exam, is wrong and as such, BSEM should look into the matter.
