Imphal, April 01 2023:
As part of the nationwide 'Save Democracy' protest launched by the party in the wake of disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha, Congress workers in the state staged protest along BT Road in the heart of Imphal city, here, on Saturday.
Regarding the protest, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president Fajur Rahim said that the party launched 'Jai Bharat Satyagraha' across the country against the conviction of Rahul Gandhi by a district court in Surat, Gujarat and his disqualification from the Lok Sabha.
Indian democracy used to be held in high esteem by many countries until recently but is now at stake under the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he claimed in justification of the nationwide protest.
While pointing out that it is natural to have constructive criticism between the ruling and opposition parties in a democracy, he contended that the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi for mentioning PM Modi's name in an election campaign in 2019 testify misuse of power by the ruling party.
Fajur Rahim said people of the country should raise their voice to save the beautiful democracy of India.
He expressed strong resentment over the police action against Congress workers during a silent candlelight vigil near Kangla western gate on March 30 evening in which some party workers suffered injuries and had to be hospitalised.
The Congress leader also appealed to the state police not to repeat such excessive act while maintaining that Congress party never launched violent protest.
MPCC general secretary S Jeeten, who also took part in the protest, told media persons that 'Save democracy' protest is being staged by MPCC cells and frontal organisations in line with AICC's 'Jai Bharat Satyagraha' and altogether 14 district Congress committees under the aegis of MPCC joined the protest on Friday.
