Imphal, April 01 2023:
The Konsakhul village authority has condemned the baseless and unfounded claims made by the Leilon Vaiphei village, cautioning that the misleading statement made by the latter through the media has potential to escalate tension and unwanted violence in the region.
While reiterating that Leilon Vaiphei was a tenant of Konsakhul village, village authority chairman D Adam Liangmai, said in a statement, that the lease agreement signed between the landlord (Konsakhul) and the tenant (Leilon) still stands today.
When Shonglal Khaute, Laljakhup Cholu and Netkong Thangneng came and begged for tenancy, they were allowed to settle as a tenant in the land of Konsakhul on humanitarian ground.
As loyalty in recognition of the landlord, Leilon Vaiphei village had been paying tax in the form of one 'Sangbai' of paddy per household in a year to Konsakhul village, the chairman maintained and claimed possessing of the supportive documents including court order issued by the PMSD (President Manipur State Darbar) in 1920, 1927, 1931 and successive magisterial court orders of C Gimson, SJ Duncan, Major Bob Khathing, Chakraborty and Maisnam Nabakumar Singh.
According to D Adam Liangmai, there was only one Leilon Vaiphei village till the 1970s but now there are 21 villages in the boundary of Konsakhul and questioned as to how these villages sprang up within a short period of time.
It is an undeniable fact that tourists coming to Konsakhul waterfall and some pilgrims from Imphal heading to Kounu Leirembi sacred site were stopped and harassed.
Besides, two innocent Konsakhul villagers were abducted, one JCB owned by Edal Singh of Singjamei vandalised and a two-wheeler burnt down by Leilon Vaiphei people on March 26, 2023.Subsequently, on March 28, a team of goodwill mission from Konsakhul village went to enquire about the untoward incident happened at Leilon but they were brutally assaulted by Leilon Vaiphei villagers wherein 20 people were severely injured while two are undergoing treatment in serious condition at Raj Medicity, Imphal.
All these facts and figures have been recorded at the police station concerned under the direct supervision of SP Kangpokpi, D Adam Liangmai added.
While asserting that a tenant has no right to claim land ownership and should not distort the rich history of Manipur at the whims and fancy of some people, the Konsakhul village chairman urged the state government to look into the looming situation of illegal immigrants and check abnormal growth of villages in the region at the earliest.
