Illegal rehab centre shut, three arrested

Imphal, March 27 2022:
Police shut down Brightway Drug De-Addiction Resort', a rehabilitation centre found operating without valid license, and arrested three operatives on Sunday.
The arrested trio has been identified as Arbin Heikrujam (30) son of Santakumar, his elder brother Heikrujam Chitorjit (40) both of Kongba Ucheckon and Tara Laishram (32) son of Itopi of Singjamei Kshetri Leikai.
After a video went viral in which officials of the centre were seen assaulting the inmates, Imphal West police and CDO team led by IGP Zone 1 Themthing Ngasangva went to the centre located at Lambal Makha Leikai and enquired about the incident.
Police found that the centre was being run without registration and required staff.
Consequently, police shut down the centre and arrested the three officials.
They have been handed over to Lamsang police station for further legal actions.
Police found seven inmates in the centre of which three are drug users, two habitual alcoholics and the other two are mentally unsound people.
Social Welfare Department officials were informed and they took the inmates to other rehabilitation centres.
Informing this to the media, the IGP said that a video went viral on social media in which some officials of centre were seen lashing at some inmates by forcing them to stand against a pillar.
During inspection, the centre was found running without authorisation.
As a result, three officials of the centre were arrested and the centre shut down, he said.
