Imphal, March 27 2022:
Manipur University authority has strongly refuted allegations levelled by Joint Non-Government Voluntary Organisation, Kakching (JNGVO) regarding selection of Wushu team for the inter-university competition to be held at Punjabi University, Patiala in Punjab from March 28 to 31.Reacting to JNGVO's accusations over non-inclusion of one Shreekant Naorem of Kha Manipur College, Kakching in the MU team, a statement of MU sports department said that the competition was earlier scheduled to held at Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University, Kanpur in UP but no date was fixed and hence selection order could not be made.
All of a sudden, the department received an e-mail at about 7 pm on March 17 that the competition will be held at Punjabi University from March 28.Accordingly, staff were called up despite being holiday for Holi festival the next day on March 18 and made hectic arrangement to form MU Wushu team for the competition in the interest of the students.
As most of the media houses were closed due to Holi festival during the time, information for the competition could not be published in all local dai lies except Huiyen Lanpao and Sanaleibak on March 19 edition.
Apart from local dailies, information for the competition was also given to players through contact numbers they had provided earlier.
As the competition is to begin from March 28, MU team had to leave Imphal by March 24 by completing all formalities within March 23.Out of four players of Kha Manipur College selected for the competition, three of them reported on March 22 and 23 but Shreekant failed to report and even did not collect equipment and kits.
As MU authority was apprehensive of missing the weight category Shreekant was playing as he failed to report, MU officials held a meeting with team manager and the coach accordingly decided to call up reserved player Boycha of Thoubal College, the department explained.
While maintaining that there was no favouritism or conspiracy in team selection, the MU sports department said that JNGVO should not make such irresponsible statement merely after a player lodged complaint without finding out the facts.
