Orientation programme for scribes on MGNREGS held

A one-day state level orientation programme for journalists on Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and its Implementation, was organised by Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (RD&PR) at Manipur Press Club here on Monday.
Addressing the gathering, RD&PR additional secretary Kengoo Zuringla stated that the main aim of organising the programme is to sensitise the media fraternity regarding the implementation of MGNREGS.
She said that since the inception and implementation of the scheme, MGNREGS has become one of the greatest forces of social security for the rural poor in our country.
MGNREGS was launched with the objective of enhancing livelihood, security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days job guarantee to people who are 18 years old and above.
The orientation programme will ensure proper understanding by the journalists on how the scheme is being carried out and implemented, as they are going to provide right information to the public, she conveyed.
Speaking as the guest of honour, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting Regional Outreach Bureau Head of Office Dr A Ibomcha Sharma (IIS) stated that MGNREGS is the biggest job guarantee scheme and it is being implemented smoothly in the state.
He asserted that the scheme should focus on creating national asset, state asset and community asset.
Addressing the gathering, Poknapham editor Aribam Robindro Sharma said that the orientation programme, is an important event for the journalists, as they will understand about the MGNREGS, which will then help in reporting about the scheme efficiently.
In his speech, Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) president Khogendro Khomdram conveyed that the MGNREGS is a very good scheme for the welfare and benefits of the people in rural areas.
He also urged the journalists to report the smooth functioning of the scheme efficiently.
As part of the orientation programme, officials of RD&PR highlighted about the initiatives and achievements of MGNREGS in the last five years, followed by an interactive session with the journalists.
The programme was attended by journalists from various media firms and officials of RD&PR amongst others.
