Imphal, January 03 2022:
An office of the Minor Irrigation (MI) which was constructed in Lamlai Phouoibi village was found to have been converted and utilised as a school.
Condemning the occupancy of 10-year old MI office by a private school, Socialist Students' Union Manipur (SSUM) has urged the authorities concerned to look into the matter.
Meanwhile, the private school founder identified as one Ngagom Joy stated that he had informed the department concerned of opening a school at the site after the MI department failed to clear the pending bills and land compensation for over 10 years, while also admitting that an office of MI department was previously constructed there.
On Monday, a team of SSUM volunteers led by its president S Yaima visited the school.
Speaking on the sidelines, Yaima recounted that previously, an office of MI department was constructed in the area.
However, the office was converted into a private school, which is unfortunate for the denizens of Lamlai.
It is more unfortunate to know that the local MLA and social workers have turned a blind eye to the matter.
As such, he urged the school authority to come to SSUM office within 5 days, while also urging the school authority to protect the academic career of the students.
In this regard, school founder and the land owner Ngangom Joy explained that after obtaining a work order in 2006, a minor irrigation office was constructed, which was completed in 2007.However, the due compensation and bill were not released despite multiple reminders to the department concerned.
The office also remained un-inaugurated for a long time.
As such, the wait for clearance of the bill and compensation extended to over 10 years.
Owing to this, Joy wrote to the department concerned requesting for commencing private work in the said land and in 2019, he opened a school.
So far, the land is still in his name and not the government.
Therefore, he urged parents/guardians not to panic with regard to the matter.
