Congress MLA D Korungthang from Tengnoupal assembly constituency has resigned from the membership of Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Reliable sources said that the MLA submitted his resignation letter to the assembly secretary on Monday and he would also be resigning from Congress party as well within a couple of days.
Speaking to The People's Chronicle, Korungthang opined that MLAs are the lawmakers and they should never violate the Constitution and existing laws.
After submitting his resignation letter, he had also informed speaker Y Khemchand that he is resigning on his own volition.
He said that MLAs are not elected to distribute old age pension funds, health cards and to transport rice bags.
They are elected to make laws and they should uphold the Constitution.
Korungthang further said that he will also resign from INC on Tuesday and join a political party other than BJP within a few days.
He will declare his decision within two days and the reason why he resigned from the membership of the legislative assembly is to uphold the Constitution.
Regarding his decision to quit Congress, he said that he has nothing against the party but he took the decision as per wishes of his supporters.
Even though he has quit Congress, he will always have high regard for Congress for its ideologies and functioning, he said.
Sports minister Letpao Haokip joined BJP without resigning from the membership of the legislative assembly and NPP as well without any respect of the Constitution.
He is now planning to contest the election from Tengnoupal assembly constituency.
He might be worried of losing his monthly salary and other facilities, which is why he shifted allegiance without resignation.
He (Korungthang) wanted to set an example to such politicians, who sees nothing but their selfish motives, by following the constitutional procedures,
Korungthang added.
