Imphal, October 05 2022:
For the first time in the state, Lemlei Enterprises has launched canned products of indigenous fish species - Pengba and Ngaton under the brand name 'Lemlei'.
MANIDCO chairman MLA Kongkham Robindro launched the products in a function held at Classic Hotel, North AO, here, on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Robindro observed how canned fish products have become the favourite processed foods in the local market as well as in other states.
As most of these food products are imported from Myanmar, the new product of Lemlei Enterprises will not only be able to deliver the rare fish species to every kitchen in the state but also bring their taste to customers in other states, he said.
Apart from the canned fish, the company is also known for its 'Hentak' product, he added.
Regarding the report of low fish production, the MLA countered that price of local fish often fluctuates and there are still many farmers, who could not sell their fish.
Besides, fish brought in from other states or from Myanmar are cheaper than the fish produced in the state, and it is also a reason for the high import rate of fish.
Robindro further said that he had requested the CM to check the imported fishes for any harmful preservatives.
The MLA also stressed the need for public support and encouragement to new entrepreneurs or industries of the state.
The people should give up the habit of taking imported food as better as this habit will drag down new entrepreneurs.
Instead, they should support products of the state and try to promote them.
One should understand that entrepreneurs play a major role in providing jobs to the people, he added.
Lemlei Enterprises managing partner Khumanthem Rakesh said that the fish products are processed in brine solution.
Though these products are officially launched only on Wednesday, they had already sent a shipment to Pune on September 8.They will be available in all major departmental stores and one can also order online with free home delivery facility from the company's website www.lemleinga.com, he said.
Informing about the reason for choosing the two fish species, he said that fish farmers of the state, especially those who rear Pengba and Ngaton, faced severe inconvenience during Covid-19 and he took up the initiative with the hope that it could help them to some extent.
He also said that the raw materials are sourced from the state only.
CAU College of Food Technology Dean Dr Ng Iboyaima, Thoubal District Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Dr N Saratchandra, Meira Foods proprietor Hanjabam Subhra and Globiz MD Roshnikumar Yambem also attended the event as guests of honour.
