Driver assaulted along Imphal-Moreh highway

Unidentified armed miscreants assaulted a driver of a passenger Eeco Van along Imphal-Moreh Highway over Rs 100, following which drivers operating passenger service along the highway have threatened to impose indefinite bandh demanding arrest of the assailants within 48 hours.
The incident took place on Tuesday around 7 pm when the victim driver, identified as Md Abdul Hakim (30) son of Abdul Aziz of Sora Keithel, was returning home from Moreh without any passenger.
As he reached Chamol village area in Tengnoupal district, which is popularly known as Zero, some armed persons stopped him at a location, where members of armed groups usually collect illegal tax, and asked him to pay Rs 250 as usual.
He, however, said he could not get any passenger or items and he was not in a position to pay their tax.
The armed miscreants insisted to pay at least Rs 100 .
As he could not pay the same, they assaulted him.
Condemning the incident, passenger service vehicles along Imphal-Moreh highway stopped service on Wednesday and staged protest at Sora Keithel in Kakching district.
Interacting with the media, a driver said that there is a police post near the location where the incident took place and they are doing nothing to stop the illegal tax collection.
He demanded the government to take up immediate measure to ensure safe passage to the transporters and arrest the miscreants within 48 hours, failing which he warned of calling indefinite bandh along the highway from the next day.
He further said that Assam Rifles at Khudenthabi check post are imposing limits on goods transported by the transporters, and demanded the government to stop such acts.
