Kakching, October 05 2022:
District Health Society, District Mental Health Programme, Tengnoupal observed the 20th "World Suicide Prevention Day" at Khangshim village community hall in Machi Block, Tengnoupal on Wednesday.
Observed under the theme of "Creating Hope Through Action", the event was attended by Tengnoupal DC Ranjan Yumnam, ZEO Shokholun Baite and CMO Dr J Touthang as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Ranjan Yumnam remarked that although most people seem to realise they have mental health problems or depression, they do not know where to go for seeking help or which doctor they can contact.
He further observed that Manipur has many hospitals but there are only a few having a psychiatric ward or a psychiatrist.
Nonetheless, the government and psychiatrists have been taking a huge role with regard to mental health, Ranjan Yumnam noted.
District Hospital Bishnupur senior psychiatrist Dr N Guneshwar, who attended as resource person, said that as young children become addicted to mobile phones, their brain function drops day-by-day.
They are also prone to various mental issues, which cause them to lose themselves.
Thus, parents and guardians need to keep a close watch in this regard, he advised.
The observance was also attended by ASHA workers, health workers, students and representatives of local CSOs and village authority.
