Cong, others observe 73rd Constitution Day

Imphal, November 26 2022: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the 73rd Constitution Day at Congress Bhawan, BT Road, here, on Saturday.

The observance was attended by CLP leader and ex-CM O Ibobi, MPSC president K Meghachandra, AICC Steering Committee member Gaikhah-gam, ex-MP Dr Meinya and other prominent members of the party.

Speaking on the occasion, O Ibobi recounted that the Hindu religion came to Manipur over 200-300 years ago, while Christianity spread in the hill districts around 100 years ago.

However, as there are no exact records, it is hard to state what religion was predominantly followed by the people before the arrival of Christianity and Hinduism.

Some might say that Sanamahism was predominant, but there are no exact records to confirm the same.

It could even be possible that the people may have followed one single religion, he remarked.

As there are no written records highlighting the entire 2000-3000 years of Manipur's history, one cannot say for certain which is the truth and which is false.

Thus, it is wrong to discriminate and segregate people on the basis of religion, he said, while contending that we are all one entity regardless of the religion we follow.

Ibobi continued; "As Indian citizens, all of us have constitutional rights and thus, we must abide by the Constitution at all times".

Constitution Day also known as Samvidhan Divas' was also observed in Pherzawl district with the commemorative events held at the office chamber of the Deputy Commissioner as well as in different schools under ZEO Pherzawl, Health and other government establishments.

As part of the event, DC Haulianlal Guite administered pledge to all DLOs and expressed his gratitude to makers of the Constitution.

In Thoubal district, National Constitution Day was observed at Waikhom Mani Girl's College organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra and Waikhom Mani Girl's College in association with the district administration.

College principal Prof H Manoranjan, Political Science head N Jyotinkumar and NYK, Thoubal coordinator Michael Mate attended the function as presidium members.

As part of the programme, a signature campaign, constitution pledge and quiz competition were also held.

The day was also observed by different departments in the district.

Staff of SDO Thoubal, Wangjing Lamding & Shikhong Sekmai Municipal Council, CMO, District Transport, Horticulture & Soil Conservation, PWD, PHED, MSPDCL, ICDS, ZEO and district police took the constitution pledge.

Lilong Haoreibi College, Thoubal district observed the day at its multipurpose hall wherein Political Science assistant professor Md Safiqur Rahman highlighted the significance of observing November 26 every year as the Constitution Day.

A release of the college informed that awareness lecture delivered by Political Science head S Santikumar Singh followed by Quiz Competition for the students on the theme: 'Know Your Constitution' and reading of the 'Preamble of Indian Constitution' were the highlights of the observance attended by heads of Mathematics, Physics & Zoology departments namely Syed Zakir Hussain, L Dhaneshwore Singh and Dr L Sanahanbi Devi respectively as the presidium members.

Meanwhile, Chassad Battalion of IGAR (S) organised a pledge taking ceremony to mark the Constitution Day observance.

The pledge was aimed to reaffirm the country as a sovereign, social, secular and democratic republic and secure justice, liberty and equality for all citizens and promote fraternity to maintain unity and integrity of the nation, said a release by PRO 1GAR(S).District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Chandel under the aegis of Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) organised a 'Painting Competition' under the theme 'Prevention of Child Marriage' and a Quiz Competition on the topic 'Know your Constitution' as part of the observance of Constitution Day.

The observance held in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK), Chandel and Centre for Women and Girls (CWG), Tengnoupal at CWG training hall, Chandel town was participated by students from various schools, CWG members, NYK and DLSA functionaries, Child Welfare Committee, Tengnoupal, PLVs, etc., Prizes were distributed to winners and participants of the two competitions later in the programme.

In Kakching district, Kha Manipur College Teachers' Welfare Association observed Constitution Day at the multipurpose hall of the college on Saturday.

The observance held under the theme 'Reading of the preamble to the Constitution of India' was attended by College's caretaker principal Y Raju, associate professor Dr N Subhaschandra and associate professor S Ingoba as presidium members.

Reading of Preamble of Constitution of India and singing of National Anthem marked the observance.
