Chandel, August 18 2015:
Expressing concern over the acute scarcity of water in and around the Chandel district headquarters for almost a month, the Naga Students' Union Chandel (NSUC) has charged Chandel PHED officials for their alleged negligence and urged for immediate re-functioning of the water supply scheme in the town.
In a release, the union said the recent devastating flood caused by Khumji and Chakpi rivers which was accompanied by heavy landslide have left all the raw pipelines and the dam totally damaged.
The denizens of Chandel district headquarters are buying water for their daily chores from private tankers at a higher price of Rs 600 per tanker.
Nothing has been done by the PHED to tackle the water woe and that the department's water tankers are using in commercial purposes, the union alleged.
The union sought a clarification from the responsible department on or before August 19 as and at the same time urged the authority to initiate steps for distribution of water at strategic locations in the district affected by flood on or before the deadline failing which the union will be compeled to take necessary action.
Meanwhile, the Union appreciated the Chandel DC, SDOs, BDOs and local MLAs of 41 & 42- Chandel A/Cs, NPF, BJP, CSOs, church leaders, chiefs and media persons for their timely help in such a crucial time in the flood and landslide-hit district where properties worth lakhs of rupees have been destroyed besides claiming human lives.
