Total hip replacement: SHRI does a first

In a first for Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI), a woman who had been rendered unable to walk due to ailments in her hip joints, was successfully treated through Total Hip Replacement surgery.
Speaking to media persons at the auditorium of SHRI at Langol today, its Medical Superintendent Dr Jugindro Soraisam said that Hip Replacement surgery has been performed thrice since 2017 but this is the first time a Total Hip Replacement surgery has been performed successfully.
SHRI has also conducted 6 successful Total Knee Replacement surgeries, he added.
Dr Jugindro narrated that Amom (o) Leihao (66) of Wangoo Ahallup Makha Leikai, approached SHRI with an ailment in her hip joints.
SHRI's Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Iboyaima Phuritsabam performed the Total Hip Replacement surgeries of the patient successfully (the right hip was successfully operated in August last year and the left hip was operated in December).
The Medical Superintendent continued that Dr Iboyaima specialised in Orthopaedic Surgery from RIMS apart from specialising in Joint Replacement from Medanta Institute before joining SHRI in 2013 as a consultant.
Dr Jugindro explained that SHRI's aim is to provide the people with world class treatment and facilities from trained doctors and experts.
SHRI is also trying to promote health tourism by treating patients from other States or countries like Myanmar, he added.
On the other hand, Dr Iboyaima Phuritsabam explained about Total Hip Replacement surgery with a power point presentation.
He explained that the main causes of such joint ailments are osteo-arthritis or avascular necrosis and other related conditions.
These hip ailments are generally treated with the help of metallic implants.
However, for Leihao, both her hips had to be treated, he informed.
Replying to a query, he said that India has the highest reported cases of knee cap ailments mainly due to the lifestyle of the people.
However, hip ailments are very common in other developed parts of the world and as such hip replacement surgery is actually one of the most common surgical procedures, he explained.
The doctor further informed that the life-span of the metallic implant is usually around 15 years and these implants are sourced from the USA.
They cost around Rs 50,000 to 70,000 and one has to bear a cost of round Rs 1.60-1.70 lakh for the complete treatment (including the implants, medicines and others), he added.
