NERCRMS project reaping fruits in Ukhrul

As the agro-climatic conditions are favourable for the cultivation of apple in Ukhrul district, North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCRMS), NEC in association with the Institute of Himalayan Bio-resource Technology (CSIR-IHBT), Palampur, Himachal Pradesh introduced the low chilling varieties of apple in Ukhrul district in the year 2019 .
The initiative received an overwhelming response from the farming community as well as from various government and non-government agencies.
Under the initiative, Augustina Awungshi Shimray of Poi village, Ukhrul district was chosen as the beneficiary for the apple cultivation project and was one of the farmers who underwent training at CSIR-IHBT, Palampur in Himachal Pradesh.
Following the capacity-building support, Au-gustina Shimray successfully grew apples in her orchard with her held seeing harvest of nearly 160 kg of apples which she sold at Rs 200 per kg.
Apart from her success inspiring few more farmers to venture into apple plantation as a serious profession, chief minister N Biren had also felicitated Augustina for her exemplary efforts.
Later, she also received financial support from the state government to train local farmers on apple cultivation and its post-harvest management.
On the other hand, Augustina expressed her sincere gratitude to NERCRMS, NEC for transforming her life and enabling her to become economically self-sustainable.
Today, she has realised a new meaning of 'Atma Nirbharta' and her story is an inspiration to the entire farming community of North East India.
