Diabetes, Older Persons' day observed in Senapati

The District Health Society along with district hospital, Senapati observed World Diabetes Day under the theme 'Education to protect tomorrow' as well as International Day of Old er Persons under the theme 'Resilience of Older Persons in a changing world' on Thursday at Senapati district hospital.
Senapati District Health Society, director CMO Dr Pfokreho Pfoze attended the observance function as chief guest and also inaugurated Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Clinic of the hospital.
The function was also attended by district hospital medical superintendent Dr M Sokhaa and Senior Citizen, Senapati president A Daiho Osana.
In his speech, Dr Pfokreho said that happiness comes in the presence of two or more people but Senapati district is yet to have any meeting place for elderly people till date.
He also cautioned that diabetes is prevalent widely at present though lifestyle disease was never heard of in the past.
Diabetes reportedly came to India after the British left particularly to government employees and wealthy people.
People who consume western foods since 1974-75 in India complain of diabetes after attaining 40 years, he said, adding that consuming food that mainly consist of sugar can cause diabetes.
The director also said that Government of India had conducted a survey 30 years-plus citizens having diabetes while state government too has been conducting a survey to identify Non-Communicable Diseases among those above 18 years of age under 'Health for All' scheme of chief minister.
Non-Com municable Diseases start from one's sugar-dominated daily eating habit, he said while advising elderly people to consume lots of fruits and green vegetables for healthy life.
Distribution of gifts to elderly people marked the function which also had Yoga session and clinical assessment like measurement of BMI & BP, examination of blood sugar and lipid profile, ECG, tele cardio consultation with SKY Hospital and Eye/ dental/ ortho I physiotherapist consultation.
