Imphal, August 12, 2013:
In a clear case of violence against women, members of Naharol Leishemba Club (NLC) allegedly got hold on the custody of a child already handed over to its mother by an order of the court, and hands it over to the father of the child illegally by threatening a lady lawyer who is the counsel of the petitioner.
Informing this to media persons at the office of All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) today, Khaidem Mani, President of AMBA stated that in the midst of prevailing 'mob-trails' and cases of crimes committed on women, Naharol Leishemba Club (NLC) of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai, is found to have threatened a lady lawyer, thereby, causing her problems in performing her duties as a lawyer.
Mani further informed that the woman lawyer who lives just next to NLC has been asked to withdraw the case related to custody of the child of one Gurumayum Radhamanbi of Sagolband Tera Sapam Leirak and Wakongthem Ratankumar of Chingmeirong Bazar Board.
The couple is divorced.
The lady advocate is fighting the case in favour of Gurumayum Radhamanbi.
The Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal passed an order on August 5 for giving interim custody of the child to Gurumayum Radhamanbi.
The child was earlier in the custody of the father, Wakongthem Ratankumar.
However, on the same day of the court order, at around 7 pm, members of NLC came to the house of the lady lawyer and threatened her to withdraw the case and hand over the child to the father.
The club members said that they do not care about any order of the court.
They even threatened to burn of the lady lawyer if the child is not handed over to the custody of the father.
Not knowing what to do, the lady lawyer took the child from its mother and handed over to the club members.
Subsequently, the club members handed over the child to its father in defiance of the court order.
An extended executive meeting of AMBA was held in this regard and condemned the acts of NLC, he stated and added that the lady lawyer has complaint to the Imphal Police Station for taking up necessary actions against the President, Vice President and General Secretary of NLC.
An FIR has also been taken up by the police accordingly.
