Imphal, August 12, 2013:
While Education Minister M Okendro is shouting for improvement of State's education system, especially in Government schools and colleges, one of the classrooms of Ch Iboyaima High School located at Singjamei Bheigyabati Leikai was found converted into a poultry house.
This 'unique' poultry farm was discovered by volunteers of Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) during an inspection conducted at schools in Imphal area today.
About 10 chickens were found reared properly inside a classroom of Ch Iboyaima High School.
When asked about this poultry house, the Head Mistress of the school Kh Anandi and other staffs admitted to have no knowledge about a classroom being converted into a coop.
The Head Mistress told the inspection team that the school has 44 students from Class VI to X with 29 teachers.
However, there were only 10 students at the time of inspection.
Furthermore, the inspection team found that two teachers of Khurai Girls' High School located at Khurai Lamlong namely Tapasini and P Keinatombi had signed the attendance register even on two Sundays as well as on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr, which was declared as general holiday few days back.
As per records, the school has 59 students and 22 teachers.
But, only 11 students were found in the school during the inspection.
In another, Radhe Primary Schhol located at Soibam Leikai, only four students were found attending the school.
The Head Master told the inspection team that classes could not be held properly due to frequent inundation of classrooms of the school.
Later, talking to media persons, General Secretary of DESAM Arambam Thoithoi said that the teacher-student ratio in most Government schools is quite disproportionate.
The excess teachers must be transferred to those schools which are deficient of teaching staffs.
Moreover, teachers should be committed to bring about a change in Government schools rather drawing salaries from the Government simply.
He further demanded the authorities concerned to take strict action against those irresponsible and negligent teachers who fail to attend schools and teach students properly.
