Imphal, December 02 2015:
After the Grand Alliance emerged victorious in the Bihar Assembly elections, Congress and Janata Dal (United) have started discussing seat sharing for the upcoming Municipal Council, Nagar Panchayat and Assembly elections of the State.
Municipal and Nagar Panchayat elections are likely to be held in February next year and Assembly election in the early part of 2017 .
Addressing a press conference held at their Babupara office, JD (U) Manipur unit president M Tombi said that after the Grand Alliance of RJD, Congress and JD (U) formed the Government in Bihar, the alliance jointly fought the by-elections of Thangmeiband and Thongju ACs in the State.
As such, the key partners of the alliance in the State - JD (U) and Congress have started discussing seat sharing for the elections to 18 seats of Municipal Council, 8 seats of Nagar Panchayat likely to be held in February next year and the next State Assembly election, he said.
Tombi said that candidates, who aspire to contest the Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections on JD (U) ticket may contact the State office of the party with relevant documents by December 20 this year.
Saying that he would leave the State for Delhi between December 12 and 15 to meet party Central leaders, M Tombi said that he would invite the leaders of Grand alliance - RJD National president Lalu Prasad Yadav, JD (U) National president Nitish Kumar, party MPs and MLAs to visit the State to address election rallies for the Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections.
Tombi further said that he would press the Central leaders to support the three Bills passed by the State Assembly regarding safeguarding indigenous people of the State.
Rampant rigging by armed persons in hill areas and over indulgence in money and muscle power in valley areas during elections have hindered election of competent candidates and it ultimately leads to underdevelopment in the State, he observed.
M Tombi also urged the public to take the opportunity of electing the right candidates in the upcoming elections.
Taking part at the press conference, JD (U) Manipur general secretary (Organisation) Lien Gangte observed that the State would gain extra pace in the march towards development if the voters elect the right candidates without taking money.
