Transporters urge Dy CM to check 'illegal taxes'

All Manipur Road Transport Drivers & Motor Workers Union on Monday urged the Deputy Chief Minister also in charge of Home to take immediate action to check collection of huge illegal taxes on national Highway 37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) by authorities by opening 13 check gates along the highway.
In a memorandum submitted to Gaikhangam, the union said that along NH-37 drivers are facing hardships and that all trucks passing through the check gates are required to pay amount ranging from Rs 150 to Rs 400 failing which numerous conditions are imposed on the erring trucks by police and other authorities.
The transports have urged the Deputy Chief Minister to take up immediate action and warned that the union will launch a total bandh if the demand is not met at the earliest time possible.
In the meantime, the Manipur Drivers' Welfare Association has called upon the Deputy Chief Minister to take action to slash the number of check gates along the Imphal-Dimapur highway and also to repair it as the rainy season has arrived.
