The Naga Peoples' Union, Imphal (NPUI) has strongly condemned the assault of Daniel Leivon Lamkang on May 28 by personnel of 22 Assam Rifles in between Waikhong outpost and Pangantabi outpost.
Daniel Leivon Lamkang was an Independent candidate for the ADC election from Aihang District Council Constituency, Chandel.
In a statement, NPUI said that Daniel was assaulted at about 11.50 pm and was detained till 1 am.
The Assam Rifles personnel also snatched away his money.
Detailing, NPUI said that the candidate and his men were first stopped by the Assam Rifles troops at Waikhong outpost for checking and later they were allowed to proceed.
Again the same team was stopped at Kakching Khunou Lamkhai by anther team of 22 Assam Rifles personnel, which is just 3/4 minutes drive from Waikhong.
Taking strong exception to the stoic silence maintained so far, NPUI questioned why no action has been taken up so far.
Urging the Election Commission of India to take note of the assault, NPUI said that the ECI is the right body to take up fitting against the erring AR personnel.
If no action is taken up against the AR personnel then NPUI is ready to launch different forms of intense agitation, it warned.
The silence is despite the complaints served on the State Government and the State Election office.
Even the Governor has been apprised of the matter.
Demanding swift action, NPUI said that necessary measures should be taken up by June 17 and the 22 AR Bn be transferred from Manipur.
