Imphal, June 15 2015 :
As AMWJU (All Manipur Working Journalists Union) has received several complaints regarding the reported misuse of 'press' stickers by non-journalists, the Union has started a drive to pull up such vehicles.
There have been several complaints of transporting illegal items and persons in such 'fake' press vehicles.
Around 1.30 pm today, AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shamjai along with other union members came across a Verna car with 'press' sticker in Secretariat area.
Suspecting that the car might belong to a non-journalist, the union members tried to stop it.
However, the car fled but was stopped at Uripok Canteen area.
W Shamjai later told media persons at the Manipur Press Club that the car was labelled with 'press' sticker at its rear mirror.
It may be mentioned that AMWJU has allowed the use of this sticker only to working journalists of the State.
He later told that the car belonged to one Akoijam Premchand of Tellou Chana of Imphal East.
The person who was driving the car was one L Bimol Singh of Jiribam, currently staying at Canchipur area.
On interrogation by an Imphal West police team, the three persons said that the car was bought second hand from West Bengal.
The sticker was already there at the time of the purchase, and today's incident occurred as they failed to remove the sticker.
AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shamjai said that the union will continue to carry on its drive to check the authenticity of such 'press' labelled vehicles as there are complaints regarding the misuse of such vehicles labelled with 'press' .
He also stated that to prevent misuse of 'Press' sticker in vehicle, AMWJU will provide sticker with the union's hologram from next month to its members.
