Imphal, May 07 2013:
With the process for instituting an Agricultural Land Use Policy of the State gaining momentum, a Core Committee to survey available agricultural lands in the State has been formed during a meeting held in the office of Agriculture Minister Md Abdul Nadir here today.
The meeting has also unanimously appointed Prof N Mohendro as the Chairman of the Core Committee.
After surveying the available agricultural land in the State, the Core Committee would be submitting a report to the State Government within three months.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Minister Md Abdul Nasir stated that the agricultural land in the State has reduced to a great extent in the last few decades.
Now, it appears that many people would not even realize that vast tract of land in Manipur used to be agricultural land once.
Chairman of Core Committee Prof N Mohendro observed that the area of agricultural land in the State is not going to be increased even though population of the people would keep on increasing.
As such, we need to adopt scientific methods of farming on the available agricultural land and pay attention to development of human resources.
Prof Mohendro further stated that the Core Committee would launch a survey of available arable land and identify what kinds of crops are suitable in these areas.
"We need to preserve and protect the agricultural land of the State.
All the heads of Departments need to focus on this and bring out a policy in this regard", he noted.
