Imphal, June 12 2015 :
Barring some minor incidents here and there, the recently held Autonomous District Council (ADC) election was by and large democratically successful, said Chief Minister Okram Ibobi.
MPCC on Friday felicitated the 46 successful Congress candidates and the two Congress-backed Independent winners of the ADC election at Congress Bhawan, Imphal.
On the occasion Ibobi further said that coming to power at all the six ADCs or not, hardly matters to the party, as the winning maximum number of seats will enable the Government to help the public from grassroots level.
He said that real development lies in rural areas and reminded the famous saying of Mahatma Gandhi which stressed similarly on the importance and significance of rural areas in knowing real India.
He credited the party's success to the Congress party itself and the State Government.
He added that detractors, who earlier stood against ADC election, have slowly realised the importance of democracy and the rights of the citizens and opined this realisation as a good step.
The Chief Minister appealed to all not to panic over the fact that Congress Government is no longer at the Centre and assured that the State will get its due shares and assistances from the Centre as usual.
Even during Congress rule at the Centre, Gujarat still got its due share and helps despite of being a BJP Government at that time.
He also assured that there will be no dearth of funds to the ADCs.
MPCC president and Deputy CM Gaikhangam stated that the hill people were deprived of concept of democracy till Congress Government under the leadership of Ibobi started conducting ADC election from 2010 .
Gaikhangam also applauded the courage of the Congress candidates this time for fearlessly fighting for the party, even though there were numerous threats against them.
He disclosed that even after winning and the declaration of results, there are threats still coming to the Congress candidates.
Gaikhangam said the successful Congress candidates should not disappoint the hope of the public and urged them to perform their assigned roles well.
On the other hand, Independent candidate Pumtulthang Lienzo who won the election from 21-Sangaikot under Churachandpur ADC joined Congress on Friday.
