National workshop on horticulture concludes

The two-day National workshop held under the theme, 'strengthening Horticulture Department for enhancing productivity, quality and sustainable livelihood' has concluded at the auditorium of MFDC today.
The workshop was organized by the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Government of Manipur in collaboration with ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Manipur Centre, Imphal, State Horticulture Mission Manipur, Central Agricultural University and National Skill Foundation of India, Gurgaon.
It was held with an aim to bring sustainable growth and development for the people by enhancing productivity of horticulture products.
Eminent scientists from different parts of the country, progressive farmers, stakeholders and others took part in the workshop.
The recommendations of the workshop includes development of gardens with traditional plants as they are genetically strong, shifting to organic production, conservation of horticulture to prevent soil erosion, making post harvest processing a priority to reduce post harvest loss and improvement in packaging systems, embedding the indigenous techniques and knowledge with the scientific methods to increase production and encouraging mushroom cultivation.
Commissioner of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, T Pamei, former Vice-Chancellor of Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, Dr KR Dhiman and Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department Director K Kipgen attended the function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking at the valedictory function, T Pamei stated that such workshops would surely increase the enthusiasm of people to take up horticulture to bring sustainable development in the State.
He further said that the recommendations made by the workshop would be forwarded to higher authorities for implementation or make changes in the previously set plans of the Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department.
K Kipgen said that horticulture is one of the important means which must be adopted to maintain ecological balance.
He added that North East is rich in natural resources and horticulture can bring sustainable growth and development in the region.
Advancement in horticulture can fulfil the needs of thousands of people, he pointed out.
Certificates were also distributed to the participants at the valedictory function.
