Secretary General, AMUCO has stated that Indian Government and NSCN (IM) started peace talk after ceasefire from August 1, 1997 .

On that day Indian Government agreed to the NSCN (IM)'s proposal to extend the ceasefire "without territorial limits".
AMUCO, sensing India's divisive policy, called for general meeting on the same night and discussed the issue and on June 15 leaders of different social organizations held a meeting and unanimously agreed to stand for the territorial integrity of Manipur.
A general strike for 66 hours with effect from night of June 15 was called and on the last day of general strike on June 18, 13 people gave their life for Manipur and many injured.
Later five more died for protection of the territory of Manipur.
It further stated that the mass movement came to an end on July 27 only when the controversial "without territorial limits" was taken out from the Declaration.
It paved the way to organize the "Protest Day" and starting from June 14, 2002 AMUCO has been organizing the day as the "Protest Day" .
