Imphal, May 17 2011:
A day after an inter-village road in Imphal was blacktopped it started to come loose when it was opened to the traffic today, leaving a question mark on the standard of developmental works being taken up in the state.
The blacktopping work of Dhobi Machu road at Konjeng Hajari Leikai, Sega Road which is 167 metre in length with a width of about 3 metre was taken up yesterday.
The work started from early morning and was completed in the night of the same day.
When the road was opened to traffic today, the black topping started to come loose.
The bitumen can easily be scooped out with a spoon which indicates that apart from not controlling the quality of the work, the bitumen was not boiled upto the recommended temperature.
According to a member of the Youth Development Club, Konjeng Hajari Leikai, the road had remained without blacktopping for a long time the completion of WBM work.
The contract work of the road improvement was taken by K Premchand of Meino Leirak.
Apart from laying the bitumen very thinly, the width of the blacktop was also "reduced to nine and a half feet though it was to be 10 feet in width".
He demanded that authority of the concerned department should blacklist the contractor and block the release of funds till the blacktopping work is done again with quality control.
The renewed blacktopping should commence from May 19, he further demanded.
