Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, April 01 2023: The wage rate under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) for Manipur has been revised to Rs 260 per day, with effect from April 1 .

According to an order issued by the joint secretary of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department (State Monitoring Cell), the unskilled wage under MGNREGS has been increased to Rs 260 from Rs 251 .

The order, however, stated that there will no changes in the wages fixed by the Labour and Employment Department in a notice issued on December 27, 2016, for skilled workers (Rs 273) and semiskilled workers (Rs 248).Mention may be made here that the Union Ministry of Rural Development had issued a notification on March 24 for increasing the wage rate under MGNREGS in all states and union territories.

In accordance to the notification, Haryana topped the list with highest wage rate for job card holders at Rs 357 per day, while Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh had the lowest wage rate at Rs 221 per day.

However, states like Karnataka, Goa, Meghalaya and Manipur had the lowest revised wage rate i.e., by 2-10 percent.

The notification was issued under Section 6 (1) of MGNREGA, 2006 .

The newly effected rate increased the wages by Rs 7 to 26 .

Last year, Rajasthan had the highest revised wage rate.

For 2022-23, the wage rate of the state increased from Rs 231 to Rs 255 .

MGNREGS is a flagship programme aimed at providing 100 working days to every household in rural areas so to help improve their living standards.

Under this programme, anyone above 18 years of age in a family is eligible for MGNREGS works.
