The 10 day Ningol Chakkouba Handloom Exhibition organised by Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers & Handicrafts Artisans Cooperative Society Limited (AWAS) concluded at GM hall, here, on Wednesday.
Speaking as chief guest of the valedictory function, social scientist Dr Dhanabir Laishram expressed concern over the invasion of power looms in the traditional handloom sector of the state and stressed the need for framing a policy to prevent power looms from replacing traditional looms.
Though power looms can boost productivity, it cannot match the beauty of hand crafted products using traditional shuttle loom, he said.
Dr Dhanabir also reflected on the importance of studying and reviving the dyeing arts of the forefathers, who used natural herbs and plants to dye clothes.
Such dyeing practices not only make the colour last long but is also skin friendly.
At the same time, handloom practice should not only be seen as a way of earning income but as a practice to conserve the age old craft, he expressed, while urging the government to take up further welfare initiatives for weavers.
Speaking on the occasion, AWAS president A Romita expressed delight on seeing revival of shuttle loom in the state.
Since preventing power looms will be impossible, the government needs to adopt a policy and reserve certain types of products for traditional loom before it is too late.
