Doctors stage protest against assault

Imphal, October 13 2011:
Owing to the assault of a doctor by patient party on the charge negligence which led to the death of an infant in the RIMS pediatric ward, the PG doctors of RIMS went for a cease work since yesterday night.
The PG doctors while protesting the physical assault by the patient party submitted a memorandum to the RIMS authority demanding action against the individual who assaulted the doctor.
The memorandum further threatened to carry out various agitations if their demands are not met by tomorrow.
As of now the PG doctors have lifted their agitation on humanitarian ground.
The assaulted PG doctor has been identified as one Dr Pravin Gurung from Sikkim.
The deceased infant has also been identified as one Laishram Achumba (1), s/o L Angamba of Haobam Marak.
Family members told media persons that Laishram Achumba was admitted to the hospital on October 6 where he was given blood according to the doctor's advice.
Later on the family members asked the Doctor in charge, Dr Pravin Gurung, to test the child's hemoglobin, which he refused on the the ground that it was a holiday.
They even requested him to permit doing the test outside the hospital, to which Dr Pravin even went to the extent of saying that he would give them the discharge certificate.
He refused to take the blood sample of the child inspite of repeated request from family members of the child.
Later, seeing the anger of the patient party the doctor tried to take the blood sample, but was not able to do so, maybe because of his inexperience.
A nurse came in took the blood samples.
No sooner, the father of the child went to the casualty with the blood samples, he was informed that his child was no more, the family members said.
Meanwhile, a meeting of the heads of departments of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences chaired by the Director Prof S.Sekharjit condemned the assault of a doctor on duty last night.
A complaint will be lodged with the police station in this connection, said a press statement released by the Media Adviser, RIMS.
The press statement further said that, in protest against the assault of the doctor the post graduate students staged a sit-in on the RIMS campus today.
The meeting also decided to urge the post graduate students to resume duty shortly after the sit-in.
Meanwhile ,the RIMS authority has taken care so as not disrupt patient care facilities by opening the Out Patient Department and Casualty services.
