Imphal, April 16 2022:
Eenat Yokkhat Lup (EYL) has strongly condemned the announcement made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to make Hindi compulsory till Class X in the entire North Eastern States.
In a statement issued today, Soibam Pibaren Meitei, general secretary EYL said Hindi is one of the most popular and developed language not only in India but the world over and as such there should be no restrictions if anyone from Manipur wants to study Hindi or Sanskrit but making Hindi compulsory till Class X cannot be accepted as it goes against the right to work for the development of indigenous language and culture.
EYL also warned the State Govt to be wary of any decision that will harm the interest of the people of the State that elected them to power.
In a move to establish 'One India', the Govt should not make any decision including forceful imposition of language upon the people which will only break the bond between different communities, added the statement.
The Government should take into consideration that the State of Manipur has a proud history of more than 2000 years and hence they should not take any decision that will undermine the rich history of the people of the State, added Pibaren in the statement.
Hindi is a well developed and widely spoken and studied language while the ethnic languages of the State are yet to be fully taught in Universities and colleges and hence it does not make any sense that emphasis is given on Hindi rather than the ethnic languages, added the statement.
EYL also claimed that the forceful imposition of Hindi upon the students upto Class X of North Eastern States goes against the UN declaration on Indigenous People's Rights (September 2007) .
