Worldwide Save Loktak Campaign reaches Pune

Pune hosted the fifth phase of Worldwide Save Loktak Lake Campaign 2010-20 today at Modern College, Shivajinagar, Pune.
The campaign was presided over by Flt.
Lt.Wairakpam Jugindro Singh (Retd.), Capt.
Namaram Khoikhoi Singh (Retd.) and Dr..HNarendra Singh of Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune.
On the occasion, Flt.
Lt.WJ Singh shared his experience about the historical ecology of the lake and its role in supporting the livelihood of the local people in and around the lake.
Pointing out that drastic changes that have taken place in the condition of the lake over the years, he also appealed to the people, particularly, the youngsters to conserve this beautiful natural heritage of Manipur.

Updating the progress of the campaign, Khuraijam Jibankumar, Managing Trustee, NECEER, Imphal stressed on the importance of the campaign in bringing out the conservation issues of the lake at global map in order to attract the attention of the state and central government, public and various stakeholders.
A documentary film on Loktak Lake by Rajkumar Robindro was screened during the event.
The campaign was attended by students, teachers and staffs of Modern College, Shivajinagar, Pune and Manipuris in Pune.
Worldwide Save Loktak Lake Campaign 2010-20 is a decade long initiative of North East Centre for Environmental Education and Research (NECEER) for creating awareness on the need of conserving Loktak Lake, the largest fresh water lake in Northeast India.
The lake is a Ramsar site viz.
wetlands of international importance and recognised as an Important Bird Area (IBA) .
