Imphal, June 18 2014:
The 48-hour Naga areas bandh called by UNC passed off peacefully today.
Reports received from Naga areas said that almost all the business establishments and shops kept their shutters down and vehicles were off the roads.
Children and youth enjoyed playing football on empty streets in Mao, Maram, Tadubi and Senapati.
It may be noted that the United Naga Council (UNC) clamped the bandh in Naga areas of Manipur from midnight of June 16 in protest against what the UNC calls it 'communal onslaught' of the Manipur Government that continues relentlessly through administrative orders, gazettes, notifications etc to usurp the land and destroy the traditional institutions and village republics of the Nagas and tribals.
In a press statement, the UNC alleged that although there is a process of dialogue of the Government of Manipur, Government of India and the Nagas in Manipur under the aegis of the United Naga Council (UNC) to address the demand for an alternative arrangement for the Nagas in Manipur outside the Government of Manipur, pending settlement of the Indo-Naga issue, in utter disrespect of the democratic process, the communal onslaught of the Government of Manipur continues relentlessly through administrative orders, gazettes, notifications etc to usurp the land and destroy the traditional institutions and village republics of the Nagas and tribals.
