Sixteen hardcore UG cadres of various banned outfits of the state laid down their arms before the Director General of Police, Manipur, Y Joykumar and IGAR(S), Major General CA Krishnan in a simple surrender ceremony held at Head Quarter IGAR (S), Mantripukhri today.
The 16 cadres who surrendered today along with arms and ammunition include three UNLF cadres, two cadres from PREPAK, one each from KYKL and KCP(Noyon), four cadres from PRA, two cadres from UTLA and three cadres from PULF.
The weapons surrendered today include six AK Rifles, two M-16 Rifles, one US made carbine and lethode gun, three 9mm pistols, one pt 32 mm pistol, one pt 38 mm revolver and one M-22 pistol and a huge amount of ammunition.
Welcoming the misguided youths to the mainstream of the civil society, DGP Y Joykumar said that the peaceful surrender of these cadres with arms and ammunition would definitely be a guiding beacon for other misled youth to follow suit for further paving the way for peace and harmony in the state.
He said that the government and the police department will see to it that the homecoming of these misguided youth is a success so that they can settle peacefully and comfortably and without any fear.
Today's function is a clear example that there is certainly no doubt to the fact that there has been a change in the mindset of those who had been misled.
He further went on to say that even the honourable minister and high ranked officers of Japan who visited Manipur recently were to a certain extent satisfied with the security and law & order situation of the state.
They exclaimed that the atmosphere of fear which normally existed in the state before is not prevalent now, things have changed and are much better now.
The DGP also assured all help and facilities which can be provided by the state government under the state's existing surrender policy to the cadres who surrendered today.
Maj Gen, CA Krishnan said that more and more of the misled youth are being encouraged to abjure violence, lay down arms and join the main stream.
He also said that those who show courage and lay down arms require support from all sections of the society to reintegrate them with the main stream and highlighted the need for all sections to extend support to them.
