Imphal, August 09 2011:
Under the National Programme for Control of Blindness, a day-long free eye care camp was organised by Manipur State Blindness Control Society in collaboration with the Lizard Library, Shija Hospital & Research Centre, Langol at Wangkhei Meihoubam Lampak community hall today.
Around 400 patients related to refractive cases, cataracts and other eye ailments were treated in the camp during which medicines were also distributed free of cost.
It is said that all those who need operation would also be conducted free of cost in Shija Hospital.
Akoijam Bhanu Devi (59), who attended the camp, observed that organising such free eye camp is very useful for poor people like her who despite wanting to have their eye check up could not do so due to financial constraints and other problems.
So, instead of organising such camp only for one day, it should go on for atleast 2/3 days so that more and more people could avail the facility.
80-year old Wangkheimayum Ibeyaima said that she would never like to live the life of a blind and so she never stop consulting the doctors for necessary treatment.
That is why she came to attend the camp on hearing about it.
Ibeyaima has already lost the vision of her left eye and the strength of the right eye is said to be weakening gradually.
One Neeru of Heirok Part-II who is a student of class V in Heirok Kabo Leikai Primary School, had also come to attend the eye camp following swelling inside one of her eyes.
The inaugural function of the free eye care camp was attended by chairman of GK Memorial Trust, Imphal Hareshwar Goshwami and retired Director of Economics and Statistics Department, Government of Manipur Amurei Singh as president.
