During his week-long visit to North East in 1996, Deve Gowda assured former RIMS Director Dr Ng Bijoy a Central special package of Rs 90 crore for six different projects to be taken up for the medical institute.
And, it was later approved by the Government of India.
Dr Bijoy is now representing Khurai constituency in Manipur Legislative Assembly.
The approved Central special package including setting up of a trauma centre, a dental college, a nursing college, and upgradation and modernization of the Biochemistry Department, opening of virology unit and expansion and upgradation of the Department of Forensic Science in the medical institute.
Though Dr Bijoy tried to implement the projects, he got retired from the service in 2002 and later on, he was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University.
After his retirement from RIMS, the Dental College and Nursing College have been set up, but the implementations of the remaining projects are still pending.
Facilities for neuro, cardiology, cardiothoracic, traumatic injuries surgeries and other medical services will be available in RIMS if the trauma centre is set up.
