The All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers' Union has urged the Home Department to check police personnel extorting money along the National Highways.
Speaking to media persons at the union office located at Thangal Keithel, union general secretary Maimom Anil Meitei said that three police personnel thrashed a truck driver and a helper at Mantripukhri at around 8.30 pm for refusing to give Rs 300 .
Aheibam Chingkheingan ba Meetei(33), s/o Shyam kesho of Takyel Khongbal Maning Leikai and Naorem Amit Kumar (23), s/o Ibohal of Bishnupur Ward No 5, who were returning from Guwahati in a loaded truck, were approached by three police personnel riding a Honda Activa and a Suziki Access at Mantripukhri.
The three police personnel who were in inebriated state asked driver Anil and helper Amit Kumar to give Rs 300.When the duo refused to give, the police personnel started thrashing both of them.
After a while, two more police personnel arrived at the spot.
Anil and Amit Kumar pleaded for help but none of the police personnel present at the spot came to their rescue.
He said that there have been many instances when police personnel posted between Koirengei and Sangakpham (NH-39) would pelt stones and physically assault the truck drivers in case the driver takes off without giving money.
Police personnel posted at Minuthong, Hatta and Chingmeirong-Watham Leirak roads would also extort money from drivers.
The Home Department must check all these illegal activities of the police personnel and also take up strict action against those personnel who physically assaulted Anil and Amit Kumar.
